There are a whole lot of things jostling for attention among healthcare providers right now, and ICD-10 is one of the biggest. With October 1, 2014 approaching rapidly and many providers still scrambling to catch up, EHRintelligence spoke to Paul L. Weygandt, MD, JD, MPH, MBA, CCS, CPE, Vice President Physician Services at J.A. Thomas & Associates, a Nuance Company, to get his insight on how the industry is progressing.
How has the one-year delay affected physicians?
I think that the delay, that was really instituted by the AMA, has been a tremendous disservice to most physicians. If you consider when the first talk of delaying ICD-10 arose, and then when the decision was finally made, the thought was that would allow physicians additional time to prepare. The reality was that once the delay was instituted, most physicians quit preparing for ICD-10, thinking they had a lot more time.
